Running Out of Space – Connor Moore

For his Connected Innovator project, which kicked off in November 2022, Connor Moore created the Running Out of Space project, for which he mapped and articulated space debris to show how many man-made objects exist above any location at any given time.

One of the key findings from this project is the immense potential of combining cutting-edge technology with accessible online platforms to bring complex issues like space debris to public attention. Connor presented his research at a number of talks, most notably a Talking Heads Public Showcase at the National Museum of Flight where he discussed both the science behind space debris and the creative technology used for visualisation; a talk to students of Geoscience at the University of Edinburgh and a range of fruitful workshops and engagements with local artists exploring the potential for data sets to enhance artistic endeavour. Connor also ensured the issue of space debris was on the radar of policymakers when he was invited to present a talk to MPs at the UK Parliament. Running Out of Space exists as an online platform with plans to create a physical exhibition in the future.
